Drainage

Drainage San Diego, CA

When you have any open spaces on your property, you want to ensure they are well-designed and that all the elements are properly installed. The landscape needs various features to make it complete, and the drainage system is one of them. This feature isn’t visible to the eye and most people forget to ensure it's planned well and installed expertly.

That’s why many people find that there is water pooling on their property and lawn areas. One way to prevent this from happening is to ensure that the drainage systems on your property are carefully planned and installed properly.

We at Landscapes West are expert landscapers and handle this job with a great deal of expertise. We have built a very solid customer base in and around San Diego, Fairbanks Ranch, Carlsbad, Encinitas and Del Mar. Our company also has a number of customers across Solana Beach, Del Mar Highlands and Carmel Valley.

When we install drainage systems, we take great care to ensure that the drains are installed properly. We take the size and contour of the land into account while also considering how various features are going to be installed in the landscaping. We are a company that meticulously handles every drainage system to ensure that the best quality materials and workmanship are used for the project.

Drainage Additions

Some properties require additional drainage installations to enhance efficiency and improve water flow. Our team assesses the existing system before offering suitable solutions. We can help expand your existing drainage infrastructure with targeted additions that enhance water management capabilities with:

  • Catch basin installations - Strategic placement of collection points in low-lying areas and water accumulation zones
  • Additional drain inlets - Supplementary entry points for surface water in problem areas of your landscape
  • Downspout connections - Linking roof drainage systems to underground networks for proper water routing
  • Overflow outlets - Secondary discharge points to handle excess water during heavy rainfall events
  • Drainage extensions - Expanding existing systems to cover newly developed or problematic landscape areas
  • Surface grates and covers - Adding protective elements to maintain system access while ensuring safety
  • Inspection chambers - Installing access points for future maintenance and system monitoring

Drainage Replacements

Our replacement services address failing or outdated drainage components with modern, durable solutions, including:

  • Pipe replacement - Upgrading deteriorated, crushed, or root-damaged drainage pipes with new materials
  • Inlet reconstruction - Rebuilding damaged or inadequate water collection points
  • System upgrades - Replacing undersized drainage networks with appropriately sized infrastructure
  • Filter media renewal - Replacing clogged or degraded filtration materials in existing systems
  • Structural repairs - Reconstructing damaged manholes, catch basins, and junction boxes
  • Complete system overhauls - Full replacement of failed drainage networks with modern designs

Signs You Need Drainage System Inspection and Repairs/Replacements

Persistent standing water in your landscape, slow-draining areas after rainfall, or water backing up from drainage outlets indicate potential issues with your system. Visible pipe damage, sunken areas over drainage lines, or unusual wet spots during dry weather suggest underground problems.

If you notice foul odors from drains, debris accumulation around inlets, or water flowing in unexpected directions, your drainage system likely needs professional attention to restore proper function.

Types of Drains

The drainage installation is part of the first phase of the landscaping project and it must be carried out well. This means taking a broader view of the landscape, understanding what type of plants and trees are being installed and what their placement will be. The different types of drains we use in our work are:

  • Area Drains - These drainage systems are simple and connect directly to a wider network of underground drains and are perfect for any low-lying areas. These can be installed in areas where heavy downpours are a norm and there are higher chances of flooding.

  • Channel Drains - Mostly used in hardscape areas such as driveways, building foundations, and patio/walkway areas. They are usually 2" - 6" wide and can run almost indefinitely, or as needed. Channel drains come with steel grates for vehicle traffic, or PVC grates for foot traffic.

  • French Drains - If you have any raised planters on your landscaping, you will need good drainage to ensure the water is directed away from your property. French drains are wrapped in landscaping fabric and then covered with stones and rocks. This prevents the drains from getting clogged with roots.
